Taking A Weekend Out To Explore San Diego!

On a recent trip to San Diego (San Diego, Los Angeles, Temecula, and Palm Springs are all relatively close to each other), I thought it would be neat to hit up some “local” spots that I never do unless my friends are present. I wondered, “How would it feel to explore this majestic history with so much to do… but all by myself?”

Mind you, this was a good year ago. I am not the type to back down from a challenge or, really, anything so I loosely planned a whole weekend. I gave myself enough leeway that if I wanted to explore a hotspot, I would be able to squeeze that in or be open to skipping on another spot. Also, I did not alert my friends that I would be in town since I figured I would hit them up very last minute, if I really needed to. The idea was to explore the city on my own, after all.

Mission Bay

I started with a low key walk at Mission Bay. I chose the parking lot with the basketball hoops and since it was early on a Saturday morning, the scene was stunning. I swear Mission Bay is one of those spots in San Diego that looks like a live painting, if not a picture perfect post card. I took pictures of the water, the background, people enjoying themselves in their daily exercise routines and shooting hoops. I made sure to stay in the moment. After two hours there, a friend called me…

Apparently, she had seen me post a picture of Mission Bay and wanted to know if I was in the area. I didn’t want to lie to her so confessed that I was in the area. I also told her my purpose. She is a really good friend, so we decided to meet up in Gaslamp Quarters.

If you are not familiar with San Diego, The Gaslamp Quarter is a historic part of downtown San Diego. We grabbed a drink (it was 11:00 am!) and then headed to a casual pizza join known as Bronx Pizza, which I love very much.

A bit unexpected but loved catching up with her. On a crazy, once-in-a-lifetime decision, we decided to hit up Mexico! We decided to go with one of our Mexican friends since it was our first time going. However, while we waited for our friend, she hit up this one San Diego marijuana delivery dispensary and can I just say how impressed I was?!

What Happens In Mexico, Stays in Mexico?!

I won’t go into details about the Mexico trip but we were there until Sunday morning. On Sunday, I went to the La Jolla Cove, which literally translates to “The Jewel”. I took a leisurely stroll, took a few pictures, and took the scene in once again. Then I headed over to Hillcrest to catch a drink at one of the local spots there with my friends.

pacific beach san diego

While my intent didn’t get fulfilled, I did have quite the experience in Tijuana with the locals and everything was so cheap, compared to San Diego. In fact, I am thinking of spending a whole week split up between Tijuana and San Diego as I have tons of places to explore and people and experiences to take in. If there is one lesson I learned this weekend, it was to keep my mind open and to experience more of life… without making any assumptions!

A Vet Experience To Never Forget

I would like to share an experience with two vets I came across two years ago. It was a beautiful Saturday and I was actually playing basketball with my league friends. I play in a basketball league and we were one of the top two teams, duking out for the championship. Everything was going absolutely wonderful until I received an ominous text message from my roommate. She messaged me stating that my 13 year old cat was behaving oddly; he wasn’t responding to the typical calls, barely eating, and was laying in the hallways away from everyone, to the side. From previous experiences, I knew something was wrong. We both knew that he was sick or that, at least, something was wrong with him.

Let Me Rewind To The Weekend Prior…

The weekend earlier, I had been playing basketball with my friends, practicing in anticipation of the upcoming week’s championship league game. It was two days before my birthday, so I was feeling good. On my way home, I picked up some Indian food for myself and both my roommates. Once I got home, I started conversing with one of them. However, ten minutes into the conversation, I noticed my little cat dude had not come up to me. A sense of alarm went off and just as I was asking my roommate where my cat was, we were two cats getting into a fight outside.

Boy, my heart sank and I had a gut feeling that my 100% indoor cat… was somehow outside, in trouble, fighting with another cat.

Now I can joke about it:

feline well

We all ran outside to find neither cat. We came back inside and searched the apartment. Nada. We all split up outside to cover more ground and also left treats leading back to the apartment. Two hours into the search, exhausted, as we were coming back up for snacks, I saw a cat waiting at the steps…

Lo & behold! It was my little cat!

I held him for fifteen minutes and we fed him and gave him water. While he would appear to be okay for the next week, on and off, he would sit away from everyone. Sitting away from everyone is very unlike the little dude.

Back to the day of the championship. It was a Saturday and I knew going to the vets in Escondido CA, or any city really, would be expensive. I called one who wanted to charge $100 just for bringing him in and only higher from there. The other vet I found told me she would look him over first.

Not having an option, I brought him in. It turned out that my cat had a temperate because he had a cyst, resulting from the fight with the stray. The cyst was infected and needed to be cleaned, drained, etc.

At first, I was told to be ready for anywhere from a $350-$500 charge, which I couldn’t afford. I pretty much told them I only had $275 and that would be after borrowing from my sister.

Guess what? They took care of my cat! They kept him for a couple of hours, drained the cyst and all of stuff. The only horrible thing was that they should have warned me of the open hole in his back. Errr!

I ended up purchasing some unsticky bandages and wrapping it around his back. He itched and would roll around to relieve himself of it but if he wasn’t the cutest thing you ever saw, feel free to call me a liar.

That vet was not only kind but I appreciate that she took awesome care of him. I would definitely go back to her with any issues that may arise in the future with my cat. We didn’t end up winning the championship game but I am glad my little man healed up well soon after!

California Love… Scratch That: California Dentist Love!

Please keep in mind that this was around two months ago or so: I was vacationing in Palm Springs (hello, hello!) along with a handful of my friends. If we don’t end up here, we usually all chip in and rent a house for three or four days. We all work hard and we usually only do something like this on a birthday event or like Labor Day weekend. The latter is much more expensive though compared to a regular weekend when the rates aren’t too spiked… sigh!

fun in the sun

It Was All Going Terrific!

The weather was amazing: a bit too hot where it made sense to tan up for 10 minutes in the sun (Note: please always use sunscreen! Your skin deserves to tan, not burn!) and then jump into the pool. Gosh, it would hurt and feel good all at the same time. We brought Sammy, my friend’s husky with us. He’s gorgeous. I love dogs, by the way <3 Of course, when you are in Palm Springs with a house full of guests, what else do you do? Drink, of course! Everyone had pitched in so we had a nice selection of Jameson, vodka, some soda, snacks, and carbs, just in case someone needed food immediately or got sick drinking a little too... "enthusiastically" (haha!) Around 7 p.m., we decided to go hit up a fancy steak house about fifteen minutes away. Of course since we had been drinking, we thought better than to drive and called a Lyft. Sweet! Everything went well. More drinks were ordered, fish and steak and potatoes and asparagus: everything so delicious.

And then, the night took a hideous turn. Actually, I take that back. I will explain in a moment. I ordered a fudge brownie sundae honestly… “to die for” is the only way to describe it. It had almonds in the brownie. During one of the bites I took, I felt something crunch a bit too much… something just seemed “off”, not necessarily painful.

It wouldn’t be until I returned home, two whole days later, that I figured out what happened. I have had dental work done on one of my teeth in the back right; a crown to be specific. I suppose when I bit down on the almond, something went wrong and the crown got cracked or broken or what not.

It wouldn’t be until I went to one of the top dentists in Escondido CA, my second home, that this news was delivered to me.

In fact, my dentist there is excellent! Instead of making fun of me, I was taken care of with care and in a sensitive manner. I have been going to the same dentist for three years and am quite happy there. They listen to my input. They know how fearful I am of dental visits and go out of their way to make me feel comfortable and when it comes to emergencies such as the one I just got done describing, they get me in as soon as possible.

Anyway, that trip is quite a memorable one as my friends tease me about me not realizing I pretty much lost a tooth… until two days later 🙂

The Top 3 Most Popular Google “Apps”

Considering where and how Google started, it is remarkable that today, in 2016, the company’s valuation in February 2016th was higher than that of Apple’s.

Imagine that. For a small little search engine that no one had heard of to becoming the dominating search engine in the world, to owning some of the most popular apps around, it might be dangerous to think of Google as nothing more than a harmless company.

Look behind some of the up and coming technology, and guaranteed, Google is working on it or has its hands behind it. Let’s go ahead and discuss three really cool apps that people worldwide enjoy, thanks to Google:

#1. When it comes to signing up for an email account, you can not go wrong with Gmail. It is easy to use and known worldwide. In fact, while it is frowned upon to use personal emails for business purposes, Gmail emails are generally accepted with no apprehension. In fact, it is useless to create email accounts attached to services such as Xfinity (or Comcast). Whether you are using an iPhone or an Android, setting up your Gmail account is easy as pie! Of course, signing up for a Gmail account is a necessity to use the rest of the Google apps like the ones that are listed here.

#2. Blogspot/Blogger: Think of this as a blogging platform that started in the age of the dinosaurs (just joking!) It’s actually a cool blogging platform with a lot of versatility built into it. Also, search engine marketers give this platform a lot of weight for the benefit of rankings. The theory is that since Google owns this platform, it is beneficial to build links from Blogspot to the site an online marketer is trying to rank. No one knows a 100% until Google unveils this fact for themselves, but an easy experiment can be conducted for those who are curious!

#3. Youtube: Talk about a killer video based platform that Google acquired in 2006. Youtube was already a great success and a go to platform for uploading fun videos, musical performances, tv show snippets, and more. The huge benefit of using Youtube is you can easily share content across the web. You can embed the videos in posts, post them on Facebook, Tweet them on Twitter; whatever strikes your fancy. For technical purposes, you can also geo tag the videos, meaning define what region you are uploading from or want to tag them at. For SEO purposes, this would be extremely beneficial to local businesses, as they are trying to rank for the services they offer in their local area.

There are quite a few other handy apps that Google dominates the market for. Google Maps is one other map that a lot of my friends use and will not drive without. How about Google Adwords which millions of people use to advertise their businesses online? Google Play and Google Hangout are two more apps that Google has gained more visibility. Of course, this goes without saying, the giant search engine ITSELF is the best, free option most people use to look up or research topics.

Conquer Your Business!

It’s no fluke: to run your business smoothly, you need to outfit it with smart tools. There are essentials you need to consider, ranging from technical to hiring employees. How do you know it is time to invest in either one?

When you can’t keep the sales pipeline going because you are too busy filling orders!

Simple as that.

Imagine You Are…

…working at a fast food joint.

Imagine, you are taking orders, right? Let’s say you’ve taken five orders. Before you can take the next one, you realize these five need to be fulfilled right away or else, these clients will demand money back or grow pretty impatient.

Now, you start making their orders. Well, now you have people still in line growing impatient while you fulfill the orders.

What can you do?! You are working by yourself!

This doesn’t consider the drive-thru scenario either but hopefully you understand the point here.

Depending on what your business is, you may need to hire bookkeeper goldcoast. This is extremely important as a solid bookkeeper can keep you on the right track, save you hours of time and money, help you stay organized come tax time, and much more. Basically, a great bookkeeper will reduce your panic and keep you sane!

The rest depends. Are you an online entrepreneur? Do you own a shoe store? An eatery or a restaurant? How about the technical stuff like a system to take orders, track orders, a printer/copier/fax machine?

Are you the face of your company, meaning are you the sales machine?

Decide what role(s) suit you the best. What is your mission? What do you do well?

The answers to the above two questions will make or break your business. If you don’t choose your mission carefully, your business will suffer in many ways. An unhappy boss can lead to an unhappy environment, unhappy employees, and lastly, unhappy customers who are your backbone with all due respect.

Then, slowly, build your team…. then?

How To Throw A Staff Party That Your Employees Will Love!

lets party

Stepping into the role of a business owner the last two years in a row, successfully, I have had to think of other things to keep the company morale on the higher end. I have worked for corporate giants that only care about what they can squeeze out of their employees… and I definitely don’t want to be that type of employer.

Keeping Your Staffers Happy!

There are several things you can do to keep your staffers happy. Just remember, though, that there is a huge difference in trying to build a good company morale and employees… just being bad employees. If you notice several employees concerned about the same issue, you should address the issue and make compromises or adjustments as necessary. This typically means that the issue is with a company policy, not the employees.

However, if you have one staffer ruining the atmosphere, you need to be quick about addressing him or her. This can kill the morale between the staffers and the company culture can be at stake.

So, what are some easy ways to bring your company employees together and enforce your company culture?

Most people will grown, but the easiest way is to cater a couple of events a year.

If you have good food, team building exercises, an open atmosphere, and company incentives, most of your staff and higher-ups will show up. Also, it is very important that you include everyone in these events: not separate lower level staff from the higher level employees. This can create a bad atmosphere.

You can also throw an outright staff party or few parties! Nothing creates bonds between employees like letting loose, talking about other things that have nothing to do with work. Allowing people to let loose does wonders! In fact, I find the best corporate entertainers and incorporate them into the theme of the party. Remember, if you set the tone, people will follow.

Road Trip Of A Lifetime

This summer, my focus will be on traveling, cars, and writing about my summer adventures in my blog. This summer, for the first time ever, I will be joining my two best friends and we will start in Mexico.

The Road Trip Of All Road Trips!

As I stated, I will be driving to San Diego, to this heavenly spot called “La Jolla”, which literally translates to “The Jewel”. From there on, we will pick up a friend who lives Tijuana and spend a week there, sight-seeing since he is a local there. We will be pooling together our savings so we can buy cheap groceries when/if we camp, stay at hotels and motels (mix and match as needed), pitch in for gas and insurance money, and what have you.

The next thing we will do, after a week in Tijuana, we will head back up to La Jolla and spend another week there, exploring all the fun things and hikes to do in San Diego. I want to visit Torrey Pines Reserve, Cowles Mountain, Three Sister’s hike and that’s after all the local bars I hit up!

From there, we will arrive in LA. We will go here rent a Lamborghini in LA or OC. This is the part of the trip that we are still debating about but I’m confident that experiences like these are once in a lifetime. So what if it’s a bit more on the expensive side?!

When again will we ever get such an opportunity? When again will we ever be this young and without responsibilities again?

Ideally, I’d like to drive a sweet Lamborghini up to Big Sur, at least. Perhaps we will rent it for the day and ride it locally. Just one of the many things we will do!

We will also spend a weekend in Big Bear before hitting up LA. I’ve never snowboarded so I am looking forward to doing this. My friends have snowboarded before and they have agreed to give me lessons.

Other locations on the list are: Palm Springs, Big Bear, Monterey, Morro Bay, San Francisco, and possibly Seattle. This all depends on how our budget goes, how long we choose to spend on each spot, and the activities we may opt for. Some of the activities will include water boarding, boating, fishing, camping, coastal driving…

Let’s see what else we will be up for!

Getting Over Your Fears By Doing Your Favorite Activities

It’s funny how once I… made up my mind to tackle my fears head on, how my life has changed. Let’s take a very specific example. When I was young, say, around me teens, I developed a healthy fear of water (ocean and pools) as I almost drowned in the ocean a couple of times (they floor gave way without me realizing it). Of course, if you take a look at some of these amazing San Diego beaches and bays, your fears may be temporarily calmed!

For a fourteen year old kid, nothing is more terrifying than her lungs filling up with harsh, salt water, and not being able to catch breath.

This unhealthy fear followed me the next few year as I watched my friends and family have fun poolside while I pretended to enjoy barbecuing. I’d flip through my favorite Surfer Magazine and enjoy the pictures but… have comforting thoughts such as, “hope that great white didn’t eat the crap out of him/her!”

False comforts, those are called!!!

What Changed?

One day, a few of my college friends decided to rent out boats and canoes lakeside. These include inflatable floating devices. As scared as I was, I decided to flip more than burgers: I took a fun, little dip with my friends. We ate, we laughed, we swam!

I joined them on an inflatable boat thingy and I loved it!!! Right then and there, my best friend (a Southern California beaut!) told me to check out kayak reviews. I found so many cool items like tandem kayaks and canoes that I could split with my buddies. In fact, I got the slightly more expensive two person (or well, tandem) kayak and now I’m tempted by this hard-shelled beauty (even though I have no storage options):

heritage two seater

Now, when I come out to Palm Springs, on the way back home, I make a stop at my friend’s house where I stay for a couple of nights. We both merge together our water toys (my inflatable one, their jetski, and a canoe) and we fish, play, laugh, whatever!

If you are not careful, you can let your fears overrule the joys you’d otherwise experience in life. For all the ebb we experience, we also need to push for the flow. If you’re afraid of something, conquer it. If you can’t do it alone, find friends and family who will! That is the secret to anything terrifying in life and as you get older, life doesn’t seem to get easier.

My advice? Get over your fears the best way possible: with your friends who love you, doing the things you love, with an open mind and an open heart 🙂 Grab your favorite toys and conquer your life!
